Assalaamu alaikum — welcome

Sri Lanka for Maldivian travellers

An hour by air, and a very different island: hills, tea and ancient cities.

Why the island suits you

For a family in the Maldives, Sri Lanka is a short hop away, about an hour by air from Malé. It is the contrast that makes it worth the trip: cool hills and tea country, rail journeys, ancient cities and temples, and national parks with elephants and leopards, where the Maldives are flat, small and sea-level. English is widely spoken, and we plan around halal food, prayer times and the pace of a family trip.

The practical shape of it

  • Best window
    December – March
  • Ideal length
    5–8 nights
  • Flights
    About an hour by air

Malé to Colombo is a short non-stop flight of roughly an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half, with several flights a day on SriLankan and other airlines. Schedules change, so check them when you book.

  • Time difference
    30 minutes

Sri Lanka is thirty minutes ahead of the Maldives, so there is almost no time difference.

  • Currency

    Online ETA

Maldivian passport-holders apply for a Sri Lanka ETA online before flying. Under the arrangement between the two countries it allows a stay of up to 90 days, and the fee has been waived since 25 May 2026. Please check eta.gov.lk for the current rules before you apply.

Questions Maldivian travellers ask us

Do Maldivians need a visa for Sri Lanka?

You apply for an ETA online before you fly. Under the arrangement between the Maldives and Sri Lanka it allows a stay of up to 90 days, and the fee has been waived since 25 May 2026. Please check eta.gov.lk for the current rules, because they have changed, and other websites may charge extra. We send you the link and the steps when you book.

How long is the flight from Malé?

About an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half, non-stop, with several flights a day. The time difference is thirty minutes, so there is no jet-lag. Airlines and times change, so check them when you book.

What is there to see that is different from the Maldives?

Almost everything. The hill country around Nuwara Eliya and Ella is cool and green, with tea estates and a famous railway. The cultural triangle has ancient cities, rock fortresses and temples, and the national parks have elephants and leopards. Many Maldivian families come for the hills and the wildlife and treat the south coast as a short rest at the end.

Can you plan around halal food and prayer times?

Yes. Halal food is easy to find across the island, and we confirm it with hotels and restaurants ahead of time. Tell us what your family needs, and we plan the day around prayer times and tell your guide in advance. Mosques are common in towns across the island.

How long should we come for, and when?

Five to eight nights suits most Maldivian families: a few days in the hills, a day or two at the ancient sites and a safari. Eid and school holidays move around the calendar, so tell us your dates and we choose the side of the island that is dry. December to March favours the southwest and hills, and May to September favours the east coast.
