Southwest monsoon
Rain on the south, west & hills. Head for the dry, turquoise east coast — Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikuda, Arugam Bay.
Sri Lanka is small enough to drive across in a day, yet it runs two opposite weather systems at once. So the honest answer to “when should I go?” is: it depends where you want to be — and we’ll shape the route to the season.
There are two monsoons, and they arrive on opposite sides of the island. The southwest monsoon brings rain to the south, the west and the hill country from roughly May to September. The northeast monsoon does the same to the east and north from around October to February.
That is the whole secret. When one coast is under cloud, the other is usually in sunshine — so almost every week of the year is high season somewhere. There is no bad time to come; there is only a right coast, and it is our job to point you at it.
Rain on the south, west & hills. Head for the dry, turquoise east coast — Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikuda, Arugam Bay.
Rain on the east & north. This is peak season for the south & west — golden beaches, Galle Fort, whales off Mirissa.
Follow a region across the year and watch its season move. Notice how the south and the east are almost mirror images — and how the Cultural Triangle stays good nearly all year.

The postcard season for the south, the west and the hills.
Between the monsoons on the southwest — the driest, sunniest stretch of the year.
This is the Sri Lanka of the brochures: golden southern beaches, Galle Fort at sunset, blue whales off Mirissa, tea country clear and cool for the train. The Cultural Triangle is dry and glorious too — though the ruins reward a visit in almost any month.
A first taste of the island, perfectly paced.
Waves in the morning, wild elephants on the way home.
The whole island in two weeks, finishing on the sand.
When the south clouds over, the east coast is at its finest.
The southwest monsoon is wetting the south and west — so the dry, turquoise east takes over.
Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Pasikuda dry out into some of the clearest water on the island; Arugam Bay’s point break fires for surfers; Pigeon Island snorkelling is at its best. Inland, the Cultural Triangle stays reliably good and Kandy’s Esala Perahera lights up the hills.
Booked for a southern beach in these months? We’ll quietly point you east instead — same island, opposite weather.
The green, uncrowded in-between — and the best value of the year.
The brief calm as the monsoons change over — short, warm showers, big skies, thin crowds.
As one monsoon hands over to the other the whole island turns impossibly green. Rain comes in short bursts rather than all-day sheets, prices ease, and the sites empty out. The Cultural Triangle and the highlands are the safest bets — and April brings the island’s biggest festival, Sinhala & Tamil New Year.
Give us the window you can travel and we’ll build the itinerary around the coast that’s at its best, so you never spend a day of it waiting out the rain.
