Sri Lanka for Belgian travellers
Long summers and long winters: both are a good time to be away.
Sri Lanka rewards a longer stay, and Belgian holiday periods make that possible. In three weeks you can see the ancient cities, the tea hills and the railway, a safari and the coast without rushing a single day. A flight with usually one stop from Brussels brings you into the warmth of the Sri Lankan winter, and English is spoken almost everywhere.

Questions Belgian travellers ask us
Do Belgians need a visa for Sri Lanka?
You need an ETA, an online travel authorisation, before you fly. Since 25 May 2026 the fee has been waived for Belgian citizens, and the authorisation covers a 30-day stay with double entry. If you plan to stay for more than 30 days, an extension is possible, for a fee. Please check eta.gov.lk for the current rules, because they have changed, and other websites may charge extra. We send you the link and steps when you book.
When do Belgian families usually travel?
The Christmas break, the February carnival or krokus break, Easter and the long summer holiday are the usual windows. Flemish and French-speaking schools have different calendars, and the dates change from year to year, so check your own school before you book and tell us the dates. In winter we use the southwest, hills and cultural triangle; in July and August we build around the east coast.
How long should we stay?
Sixteen to twenty nights suits a first trip with time to spare: the cultural triangle, the hills and tea railway, a safari, and a proper week on the coast. Only the first 30 days are covered by the ETA, so a longer stay needs an extension.
Is Sri Lanka a good summer holiday for a family from Belgium?
It can be, if the trip is built for the season. From May to September the east coast around Trincomalee and Pasikudah is dry and calm, while the southwest is in monsoon. We plan a family summer around the east, with a few days in the hills and the ancient sites, and pace it for children.
How long is the flight from Brussels?
There are no direct flights. It is usually one stop, often via the Gulf or Istanbul, with roughly 11 to 12 hours in the air plus the connection. Some travellers fly from Amsterdam or Paris. Routes and times change, so check them when you book. We keep the first day light so the flight does not take the start of the trip.
